DESCRIPTION |
Mystery Airships in the Sky delves into the little-known history of late 19th century American and Canadian airships; that which we today call UFOs. A large portion of this book contains sketches of the thousands of alleged airship sightings that occurred in different parts of the two countries. April 1897 was an especially busy month for airships, and they were seen in the Upper and Lower Midwest. Other portions of the book delve into the personalities that popularized the idea of people flying about in the skies. Persons like astronomer Percival Lowell, who created an entire world civilization on Mars from a misunderstanding of an Italian word. There were also real people experimenting with the idea of human flight. People like Samuel Pierpont Langley, Octave Chanute and Hiram Maxim, to name but a few. These sightings occurred just a few years before the Wright brothers helped to perfect human flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
